In December 2009,Emma Straub came across The New York Times’s obituary for Jennifer Jones, a film star from the 1940s and ’50s who was known for her rocky relationships and her struggles with depression. “I had never heard of her, and I had never seen any of her movies, but I read it and I was like, ‘There’s a novel,’ ” Straub says. She was working on another book idea, but she was haunted by Jones’s story. “I just kept coming back to the idea of this woman’s life. This woman who made the decision to become a movie star.”
